Summer wines for the indispensable toasts

28 June 2024

by Barbara Amoroso Donatti

In the heat, it is certainly not the wine that is held to find refreshment. But we know that there is no beautiful season without summer wines.

The end of the day that deserve a toast, dinners and aperitifs in the company of admirers of fine wine, or moments to be dedicated through the training of the senses, we know will studd the weeks where the world slows down.

Here is a small selection of summer wines that deserve to cross the thresholds of precious wineries, with something really special just for Luxury People readers.

Elyond, the Gewürztraminer caressed by the pink grapefruit

Zero boredom for this elegant South Tyrol DOC Gewürztraminer Riserva Elyond 2020 by Cantina Laimburg.

The notes of pink grapefruit are a dip in the freshness of a white suitable to accompany dishes based on fish, shellfish and seafood, so we put it among our favorites among summer wines.

Alone or for an aperitif it could induce you to pour, and pour and pour into the goblet, maintaining a strict anti-summer heat temperature.

Ròdon Italian pink wine loved by the French

Ròdon 2015, Chiaretto di Bardolino DOC Le Fraghe, is a rare 9-year-old rose wine, something unthinkable for ordinary mortals but not for Matilde Poggi, a producer with 40 years of experience on her shoulders and an unwavering confidence in the vines of the territory.

His pink wines seem sculpted by the sea, organic in attitude thanks to the wind coming from Monte Baldo, balanced and of great pleasantness.

2015, the maximum expression of a work of high quality and foresight, is no longer in the cellar, but, for the readers of Luxury People we have snatched the promise to draw on its private reserve, because you cannot but taste it among all the summer wines we want to present to you.

Malagousia, the Greek Cinderella

Malagousia Microcosmos 2022, Ktima Zafeirakis

In Greece they call “Cinderella” this wine with delicate floral notes originating in Aitoloakarnia. But Cinderella eventually married the prince and was crowned in turn. Thin, with excellent drinkability, directly from the cradle of Western civilization, the fruit of a bottled vine in its dry version for the first time in 1980 in Porto Carras in the Greek Chalkide peninsula. For this summer we recommend Microcosmos 2022 by Ktima Zafeirakis winery located in Tyrnavos, Thessaly, served fresh to emphasize the citrus notes wrapped in those of sage.

Oro Rosso, the Trento DOC selected from 300 producers

The Trentina cooperative tradition has a qualitative advantage: the possibility of selecting the best grapes from hundreds of winemakers and micro terroirs.

Cembra's oenologist, Stefano Rossi, then applies satellite technology to capture the moment of the perfect collection. Oro Rosso Trento DOC Riserva Dosaggio Zero 2018 enjoys elegance and fine bubble based on the sovereign vine of the Metodo Classico, Chardonnay.

Among the summer wines, we have included it precisely for this elegance at the end of the bubble.

Secolo Novo, the Franciacorta of legal age

Brut millesimato, perfect for aperitif and all meal, with 18 years on his shoulders. This Classic Method signed by Le Marchesine is from 2006, and is among the rare bottles. Soft bubble, scents enriched by time, a wine full of the identity of its grapes; here too Chardonnay, repeatedly awarded for quality. On the market you will find 2011: Secolo Novo Brut Millesimato 2006 Le Marchesine is one of those wines for which it takes a lot of determination to convince the producer to give you a bottle.

Cannonau, Sardinia meets terracotta

Ancient, rare and unpredictable. The amphorae are attractive by nature, for that reference to the ancient. Wines that seduce the head before the palate. The growing interest in these nectars has given rise in recent weeks to the first edition of Amphora Revolution, the event dedicated to terracotta wine pots. Elena Casadei is among the producers who have found the formula to keep the freshness of the wine at the center. His Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2021 refined in amphora amazes for the scents that with the summer marry without upset a few degrees less in the glass.

Diadem, wine and Swarovski crystal

We went to the Relais Villa Olmo to taste the cuisine of Leonardo Nocenzi, skilled in bringing balance, aromas and textures with a Tuscan soul with originality to the table, remaining anchored in the regional tradition. His personal vegetable garden is more eloquent than a thousand words. Between one course and another, we did not miss the bottle decorated with original Swarovski from the Toscana Rosso IGT Diadema 2019. The elegance of Nocenzi's dishes do not claim full-bodied drinks, on the contrary, but given the rarity of such packaging, it's a pity not to take the opportunity to uncork one.

Tenuta San Guido, not only Sassicaia

On the Sassicaia there is nothing to add: renowned all over the world, it is a must-see oenological stage, having fun tasting more or less rare vintages. The only advice, buy it in the company or from certified suppliers, it is the most counterfeit wine in the world. In this special selection we point out Guidalberto 2021, Toscana Rosso IGT, younger brother of Sassicaia, but with the same noble DNA. Complex, not heavy neither in the nose nor in the mouth, even in the summer it deserves the glass, always with 2/3 ° C less to fully enjoy it.

Missianer, the fresh red to drink

There are few red wines that can be served at a temperature that forgives the summer heat. Missianer, the Slave South Tyrol DOC of the San Paolo winery is among them. A vine re-evaluated in recent times, available only in its region of origin and little more for the poor distribution of this grape of the regional tradition. Juicy on the nose, with a scent reminiscent of wild strawberry, raspberry and violet, its flavor hesitates in the mouth leaving a full and satisfying feeling. To be combined unscrupulously with what most cheers up summer evenings.
